Gorkha Access Students Graduated
On January 11, 2014, 40 Gorkha Access students successfully accomplished their two years study and graduated from Access Gorkha center. Mr Hemanta Raj Dahal, NELTA President and Sara Denne-Bolton , Regional English Language Officer awarded them the certificates of completion. In a much emotional and joyful ambience, they congratuated all the graduates and wished them for their better future.
Access Students involve in Community Incentive Program
On July 28, 2013, Access Students involved in Community Incentive Program.This activity was chosen by the students themselves while the Access family was in a discussion to select an appropriate program under the community service. They decided to conduct this program and set up the title "Community Incentive Program". After they specified the name of the program, they decided two different localities: Hospital and Mahendrajyoti Higher Secondary School as there are sick people and mentally-impaired children respectively. They wanted to council them and provide some incentives for the encouragement. The program was held in twice in two different venues. They invited the Chair of School Management Committee and the Principal of Mahendrajyoti H.S.S to take the seats of Chief guest and a Guest respectively and NELTA Gorkha Chair to take a seat of Chair of the program. The program was facilitated by Mr. Upendra Babu Dhakal, the Treasurer of NELTA Gorkha .The rationale of the program was explained by Mrs. Hari Maya Sharma. The students formed five different groups comprising 8 members in each and handed the stationeries over to the Chief guest and the Guest turn by turn. The Principal and the Chair of School Management Committee delivered their remarks about the program with some suggestions to the students to continue it after they become the graduate of Access. The program was adjourned by the Chair extending vote of thanks to the guests, teachers and students. After that, students made lines and moved to the hospital with the banner and distributed fruits to sick people admitted there. They talked to them and requested to accept their incentives. They were enjoying while talking to the patients and helping them. They delivered their remarks of happiness with the commitment of continuing such help after they become self-dependent financially.

The chief guest of the program was Ms. Susan Parker-Burns, Head of Public Affairs Section, U.S. Embassy, Kathmandu whereas there was another special guest from the U.S. Embassy, Mr. Fife MacDuff, RELO. There were other guests such as Mr. Hemanta Raj Dahal, President, NELTA, Mr. Kamal Prasad Dhakal, Chief District Officer, Gorkha district, Mr. Lila Mani Pokhrel, District Education Officer, Gorkha distrct and Access Country Coordinator, Mr. Shyam B. Pandey were present in the program. Ms. Susan Parker-Burns distributed the certificates of award to the graduating students, which was signed by the Ambassador, Peter W. Bodde. Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Susan Parker-Burns congratulated all the graduating students and also mentioned that they would be able to lead their country, Nepal in the future.

Eid-ul-Fitr Celebration in Access
On August 18, the auspicious eve of Eid–ul–Fitr (Muslim festival), the students of the English Access Microscholarship Program, Gorkha center, celebrated Eid- ul-Fitr. The students were divided into two groups A and B. In the presence of NELTA members and all Access teachers, group ‘A’ shared a brief introduction about Eid. In the morning session, the Access teachers and students watched videos of Eid-ul-Fitr celebration. Then, they exchanged greetings and good wishes. The students also prepared greeting cards for their family members who have been living away from them. Finally, the students were given sweets by Harimaya Sharma, an Access teacher and Chair of NELTA Gorkha branch as well as by Bom Bahadur Thapa, immediate past Chair, NELTA Gorkha branch. Access students celebrate Teej festival Access students celebrated Teej (Nepali Hindu festival) in Gorkha organized by Access Gorkha center on September 15, 2012. Access students and teachers of the center, Fulbright English Teaching Assistants (ETAs), NELTA Gorkha branch executives, NELTA life- members, parents of the Access students, and some other well-wishers were present. The students sang Teej songs and had a dance competition among themselves. They also performed several non-competitive dance items and songs. The winners were given prizes by the ETAs. The participants were also provided a Teej special meal 'Dar' in the evening. Access students celebrate Halloween 2012 Access students from Gorkha Access center celebrated Halloween on October 31, 2012, led by Fulbright English Teaching Assistants (ETAs). The chief guests of the program were the parents of Ms. Julia Coffin, ETA, Mr. Mark Kritlow and Ms. Iyn Coffin. The program was initiated by Ms. Krista Schaefer, ETA who shared a horror story about Halloween. Ms. Rachael Klein, ETA, briefly introduced Halloween, its background, and ways in which it is celebrated in the United States. All the Access students were involved in activities, such as apple bobbing, hand painting, eating bread, fortune telling, and trick or treating. Thanksgiving Day Celebration English Access Gorkha center organized a Thanksgiving Day celebration event in Access Center, Haramtari, Gorkha on November 22. There were 80 Gorkha-based Access students, 8 teachers, 3 NELTA Gorkha branch executives and 5 English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) from the Fulbright Commission who are currently working in Gorkha district. The chief guest of the event was Mr. Bam Bahadur Thapa, past President, NELTA Gorkha branch. The celebration started with the brief introduction of Thanksgiving Day by the ETAs, and they also explained why and how Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in the USA. Students were then asked to be involved in writing activity where they wrote why they are thankful for. After that the students were told about food items that the Americans normally eat on the occasion of the Thanksgiving Day. Turkey—Hand activity was another attraction of this celebration where students drew a turkey hand and wrote why they are thankful for. The celebration ended with eating different foods items such as apple pie, pumpkin pie, beans, sweet corn, mass potatoes, fruits and vegetables. Instead of turkey, students were provided chicken to eat. English Language Learning with Scrabble Project English Access Gorkha-based 80 students involved in a scrabble game project on December 7, 8 and 9 facilitated by Ramesh Lal Nakarmi, President of Nepal Scrabble Club, Kathmandu. It was to make the students aware on using scrabble game so that they use the idea to develop their vocabulary power, develop dictionary skills and improve English language proficiency. This event was sponsored by Regional English Language Office (RELO), U.S. embassy, Kathmandu. There were five different sessions for the four different groups of students from both first and the second cohort students. All Access instructors and Fulbright Commission English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) also were involved in the event. With the ideas given in this event and with the involvement in different activities conducted in the workshop, English Access students were aware of using scrabble home. When technology outreach volunteer Gretel Patch visited Gorkha, she challenged the students to look at their town through a visitor's eyes. What would that person notice? What makes their town unique?
Students were presented with a fictitious scenario: The Prime Minister was coming to Gorkha! He wanted to meet with them to determine what they have learned and if the Access program should continue.This was their chance to be proud of their school, their town, and their accomplishments.
