Access Bhairahawa Center Students Graduated
Forty Bhairahawa-based Access students graduated on March 02, 2013. The chief guest of the program was Mr. Fife MacDuff, RELO, U.S. Embassy, Kathmandu whereas there was the representation from the government of Nepal too, Mr. Durga Prasad Pokhrel, Chief District Officer (CDO), Mr. Tika Ram Aryal, Assistant District Education Officer were present in the program. Mr. Kunjer Mani Gautam, executive member, NELTA executive committee and Mr. Shyam B. Pandey, Country Coordinator, Access Program were the other guests of the program. 40 Access students and their 40 parents, teachers, representative from the American corner Bhairahawa Mr. Dillip Bhattarai were also presentin the program.
Speaking at the ceremony Mr. Durga Prasad Pokhrel said that the students were very lucky to receive such opportunity. On behalf of government of Nepal, he also thanked to the U.S. Embassy and the American government for their generous support to the students of his district. Similarly, speaking at the same ceremony, chief guest of the ceremony, Mr. Fife MacDuff, RELO congratulated to all the graduating students and also mentioned that this program has helped to produce 40 leaders in this district whereas some of the committed students would lead their community. The master of ceremony was Mr. Shyam B. Pandey, Country Coordinator, Access Program.

Independence Day Celebration
Bhairahawa Access center celebrated America’s Independence Day on July 4, 2012. Students received information about the importance of historical and cultural aspects related to Independence Day. Students were shown a short documentary on the celebrations of American Independence Day. Then, the students played musical chairs with great excitement and energy. Gayatri Khatri, Indu Gyawali, and Sandhya Regmi stood first, second, and third respectively in the musical chairs competition among the girls; whereas Bishal Thapa, Sunil Khanal, and Ramkesh Pal grabbed the first, second, and third position respectively among the boys.
Similarly, on July 6, 2012, Access students attended a talk program organized on the occasion of the observance of the “236th American Independence Day.” Mr. Jesse Connelly, Special Officer from American Embassy, Kathmandu, was the speaker. He highlighted that July 4 is a holiday in the USA, celebrating the signing the Declaration of Independence. The Access students also participated in a quiz moderated by Mr. Jessey Connelly which was about the U.S. and American culture. The quiz was open for all the participants. The Access students also presented some dance routines. Finally, all students danced and enjoyed American pop music.
Access students involved in Quiz Contest
The Access Bhairahawa students were involved in a quiz contest organized by Access Bhairahawa center on July 14, 2012. Prior to the conduction of the activity, the students were informed about the event and were given the opportunity to prepare. Out of 40 Access students, 16 were divided into four groups, and the rest of the students were the audience. The questions were chosen from various topics, including English Language, Nepali and American culture, current affairs, and the Presidential election in the U.S. After completion of the program, the winners were awarded with the prizes.
Access students celebrate Teej festival
Access Bhairahawa center organized a Teej (Nepali Hindu festival) celebration program on September 15, 2012 to develop the intercultural understanding among the students. The activities included singing Teej songs and a dance competition. The students performed songs and they danced on stage. They shared their feelings, achievements, and problems through their songs. At the end of the first part of the program, a ‘Token of Love’ was given to the winner of the dance competition. The second part of the program was sharing a Teej special food named Dar. All the students, guests, and teachers were involved in this program.
Columbus Day Celebration in Bhairahawa
On the occasion of Columbus Day, on October 12, 2012, Access Bhairahawa center students participated in a talk program which was organized by American Corner Bhairahawa. All 40 Access students and teachers were present for the talk on the history of America and the significance of Columbus Day, which was facilitated by Mr. Dillip Bhattarai, a founder member, American corner, Bhairahawa. On the occasion, the speaker also highlighted the history of the Columbus Day and mentioned about the life of Christopher Columbus and his voyages to the New World.
U.S. Presidential Mock Election
Access Bhairahawa center conducted a mock election program on October 16, 2012. All the Access students (40) were divided into two groups (20 in each group). They formed two different political parties, namely Democratic and Republican, comprising of seven members each. Both the parties discussed debated and became familiar with the different issues that the American presidential candidates are faced with at this moment in U.S. history. On behalf of Mitt Romney, Dimple Sunar, was the candidate of Republican Party, whereas Mohammad Rafeeq was the candidate for the Democratic Party. Each Access student invited two their friends from their regular school to take part in the Access U.S. Presidential mock elections and learn about the issues and the American electoral system. There were 150 participants in total, including the 40 Access students.

Students learn about technology
Even though computer access is limited in this small border town, students like to use technology and enjoyed learning more. Technology outreach volunteer Gretel Patch visited the students and taught them some basic Internet terminology, safe Netiquette practices, and gave them a chance to experiment with cameras, a video camera, and an iPad.
